Outrageous Gas Prices! Petition Congress
Ok so this may not be the best place for me to get even remotely political but I live in a part of the midwest where we have many working families living in rural areas. We simply cannot afford to live with gas at these prices. It’s not just about not being able to drive on vacations or afford larger vehicles etc. Many of us already drive “fuel efficient” cars and do our best to cut our trips down. I do it for environmental reasons as well as monetary ones, but the price of Crude oil is down from this point last year yet gasoline is at an all time high!! It’s outrageous. It is gouging at its finest and fortunately today Moveon.org started a petition that has been wildly popular. See the link below….
Hearings start today on H.R. 1252, a House bill that would makegas price gouging a federal crime, punishable by 10 years in prison. There are hearings taking place now that should put a stop to this madness but of course the big oil lobbyists are fighting back hard so it’s going to take a giant grassroots push to get this insanity under control.
Below is the letter from moveon
As of yesterday, gas prices are the highest in U.S. history—we just passedthe 1981 record, even adjusted for inflation.1 Prices could reach $4.00per gallon in parts of the country, just in time to crimp summer vacation plans. As consumers suffer, the oil industry continues to reap the windfall—breakingprofit records on an almost quarterly basis. It’s outrageous!
Enough is enough. Hearings start today on H.R. 1252, a House bill that would makegas price gouging a federal crime, punishable by 10 years in prison. Speaker Pelosihas said she’ll move the bill to a vote this week—if there’s the two-thirds majority required to fast track the billthrough the process.2
Oil company lobbyists are frantically trying to stopthe bill. Your representative needs to hear from you today. Will you sign our petitionasking Congress to pass the price-gouging bill—and then send it to your friends?
“Gasoline price gouging should be made a federal crime before the summerprice increases hurt more American families.”

Rep Bart Stupak (D-MI), sponsor of the House bill said this of his motivationto introduce the legislation:
“In April … crude oil was $7 a barrel cheaper than last year (but)gas prices were almost 50 cents a gallon higher. Clearly there’s moreat play than simply the world crude oil market.”3
In April, more than two-thirds of Americans reported that their gas bills werecausing financial crunches, with a full third saying it was having a “serious”impact on their families.4
That same month, the top two US companies, Exxon-Mobil and Chevron-Texaco, announceda combined $14 billion in first quarter profits.5
It seems like even the oil industry has gone too far this time, and it’s timeto balance the scales. The Senate passed a price-gouging measure out of committeelast week, and the House bill now has over 100 co-sponsors from both sides of theaisle.
The oil industry is nervous. They’ve sent their lobbyists to the Hill in fullforce to stop—or at least weaken—these bills, and they’re pulling outall the stops. The American Petroleum Institute, an industry front group of morethan 400 oil and gas companies, even threatened that new laws could increase gasprices more.6
Enough is enough. This summer, we can stop Big Oil from profiting at the expenseof American families. Can you sign the petitionto ask your representative to make gasoline a price gouging a federal crime now?

Don’t forget to pass it on to your friends—this week is an historic opportunityto send Big Oil a message that we’ve had enough.
Thanks for all you do.

hiya to all my american friends - You are stunned by your gas prices, well over here in england you would be absolutley stunned at how much we have to pay for a litre of petrol/gas - some places it is nearly £1 a litre which at the moment the exchange rate is $2 to £1. Which makes $4 a gallon quite good from here!! I can’t do the maths!, but i am sure someone will.
take care love hugs and light
love the new site christen

Hi there to Christen and everyone.
The fuel prices have unfortunately hit everyone’s pockets. This weekend on the sunshine coast in queensland the fuel prices are close to $1.40 per litre, which brings it to just over $7.00 per gallon!
Queensland motorists are supposed to get a relief of 8 cents per litre on the fuel they buy, and if that is so then really we are the most expensive state in australia to buy fuel!
None of the other states get this so called relief, and NSW particularly pays an extra so many cents for road improvement, and then another so many cents for something else in their fuel costs and their fuel is only a few cents dearer than us!
And yes janie, I sympathise with you as well, I can remember fuel prices were beyond when I was over there a few years ago! I just worked it out roughly and we would be paying $5 australian per litre in the UK!!!!!!!!
love the site and love yor blog!

Wow, I don’t know how you all do it. In Europe I know they have mass transit systems that are fairly well connected - not so here in the US everything is so far apart and you have to drive - very rare to have good public transportation which is unfortunate. Also we have the technology to develop clean fuel - we just aren’t doing it and that bothers me.
How is Australia with their transit? At 7$ a gallon I should hope better than we are… it would be impossible to live here with those kinds of prices goodness!

Sydney has a great transport system, as does melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. Brisbane (Qld) is pretty good (depending who you talk to) but here on the sunshine coast just 1 1/4 hours from brisbane it is pardon the expression ‘crap’. It has only been the last 8 years that we have had a (ir)regulular bus service. It does have bus stops, but it is called hail and go, because that will give you some indication of how far apart the stops are!
If the bus is full, then you can hail all you like because the driver will keep going!
That is how the little fellow Daniel Morecombe was taken, he was waiting for the bus to get a haircut, and he was never seen again. The bus driver admitted that he did not stop for him because his bus was “full”.
Full or not, why would you leave an 11 year old child standing on the side of a semi highway when he has hailed you?
Apart from that - sorry I got sidetracked- the fairs are expensive too. I have only caught a bus once here and that was from the mall 2 miles from our house, and it cost $3.50 and I still had to walk about 500 yards to reach my home!
So christen you can see that we really need to drive our cars here too, especially when you have the weekly shopping to cart with you
On the upside tho we have the most beautiful beaches on our doorstep, and a fabulous climate with our winter rarely being cold enough to turn the heating on. Winter starts tomorrow and I am still swimming in our pool!
I would one day love to come to the states, my sister and her late husband lived in El Paso for years. I will get there………eventually
Take care
love your pics and your blog
